Sacramento River Watershed Information Model (SWIM)

For years SRWP has been working towards providing a watershed resource library to address the information needs of its stakeholders. Early on it was determined that this would best be accomplished by providing a virtual resource center through the SRWP web site. In 2007 SRWP took a significant step towards that goal through the launch of the Sacramento River Watershed Information Module (SWIM).

The SWIM Project started in 2006 with seed funding from SRWP's U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grant. Since 2007, the project has been expanded through a CALFED Watershed Program grant.

SWIM will become a key feature of SRWP's web site by providing an online database of maps, GIS coverages, documents, photos and other resources that will be searchable through an online map interface.

• Resource Library

  
  A publicly-accessible digital library for water and natural resource-related information within the Sacramento River Watershed. Authorized users can upload documents, photos or other information, tag it on a map, and describe their project or data using forms. This information is archived on the SRWP website. The library entries are processed nightly, and abstracts are sent to CEIC and to the Digital Atlas.

• Direct links between Resource Library and Digital Atlas

  
  For Resource Library projects with geocoordinates, a link on the project page opens up the Digital Atlas directly to the project coordinates.
  
  In the other direction, there is a GeoRSS layer in the Digital Atlas that shows all SRWP Resource Library projects. Clicking on any of those projects in the Atlas will display the project in the Resource Library.

• GeoRSS feed for Digital Atlas and Google Maps

  
  For all Resource Library projects with geocoordinates, a GeoRSS feed is generated that can be displayed as a layer in the Digital Atlas. Another GeoRSS feed is generated for display in the Google maps that appear in the Resource Library.

• Digital Atlas

  
  The SWIM Digital Atlas features interactive web-based GIS maps that allow web users to explore the Sacramento River watershed. You can add your own data layers and generate PDFs of your maps to print or share. The Atlas data layers are extractable for use in GIS software or Google Earth.

• Direct link from Geofinder to the Resource Library

• XML feed for CEIC

  
  Every night the Resource Library project and resource pages are abstracted as XML files which are then submitted to the California Environmental Information Clearinghouse (CEIC). Once CEIC analyzes these files, they can be queried using the GeoFinder and CEIC's query system.

• Geofinder

  
  This map-based search tool allows you to browse water and resource-related documents in SRWP's Resource Library. In addition to searching for SRWP resources, Geofinder also provides a portal to the CEIC's statewide data catalog.
