Program: Exploring the Wonders of Our Wetlands
Funding: $10,000

"Exploring the Wonders of Our Wetlands" project will develop a hands-on educational exhibit on wetland wildlife for K-6 school groups and families. Other elements will include restoration of native habitats and the role wetlands play in improving water quality and protecting the watershed. Between April and June 2001, it is expected that approximately 1,600 K-6 students, their teachers and parents will participate in the Discovery Lessons based on the exhibit. In addition, the exhibit is expected to reach over 700 elementary aged children and adults.

Explorit will also facilitate Davis Wetlands field tours for school groups. The site has over 400 acres of restored permanent and seasonal wetlands, riparian woodland, and grassland. The tours will focus on group experimentation and observation in the wetlands, emphasizing wildlife habitat and water quality enhancement.

Explorit staff will develop supporting materials and resources for teachers and K-6 students consisting of:

  1. a Teacher Enrichment Resource Packet;
  2. a pocket size lab book for student participants to record their field trip experiences; and
  3. a web-based wetlands quiz and resource links which teachers and students can access from the classroom.
